FAQs
ADA compliance in parking lots refers to adhering to the accessibility standards set forth by the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) to ensure that parking facilities are accessible to individuals with disabilities.
The number of required accessible parking spaces depends on the total number of parking spaces in the lot. Generally, one accessible space is required for the first 25 spaces, with an additional space for each increment of 25 spaces thereafter, and at least one of these spaces must be van accessible.
Access aisles should be marked with diagonal stripes (called Chevrons) and always kept clear of obstructions. This allows people with disabilities to transfer from their vehicles to mobility devices.
Accessible parking signs should generally have a blue background with white text and the International Symbol of Access. This color scheme helps distinguish them from regular parking signs.
Accessible parking spaces should be located as close as possible to the accessible entrance of the building they serve. If no accessible entrance is available, the spaces should be near the shortest accessible route to the building.
